MVP – Tom Brady QB New England Patriots – Brady is flying under the radar this season as his biggest headlines have come courtesy of his hairstylists decision to go with the Beiber look. The Patriots have parted ways with Randy Moss, are getting great production from Danny Woodhead and BenJarvus Green-Ellis…Logan Mankins missed the first 8 games of the season in a contract dispute and all Brady has done is win games. Sound familiar? Brady won’t put up the best fantasy football numbers this season, but he will lead his team to a division title and will continue to make big plays and avoid making mistakes.
Honorable Mentions: Peyton Manning, Arian Foster and Aaron Rodgers
Defensive Player of the Year – Clay Matthews OLB Green Bay Packers – The guy has 10.5 sacks through 9 games… He has quite simply shifted offensive game plans to account for his presence off the edge and is still winning his matchup. While other players are making more consistent plays and have more tackles on the season, there is nothing more distracting for an offense than giving up a sack…and Matthews is the best in the business at that.
Honorable Mention: DeAngelo Hall, Osi Umenyiora
Offensive Player of the Year – Phillip Rivers QB San Diego Chargers – The Chargers are struggling to win games, but that is largely a result of terrible special teams play and inconsistent effort on defense. Rivers is on pace to shatter Dan Marino’s single season passing record and is doing so without Ladanian Tomlinson and Vincent Jackson. The Chargers aren’t dead yet and Rivers is the reason why.
Honorable Mention: Peyton Manning, Arian Foster
Defensive Rookie of the Year – Ndamukong Suh DT Detroit Lions – It’s rare for a rookie defensive lineman to show up ready to play in the NFL, even more rare that he could be the best player in his position group on his team, still even more rare that he may be the best player on his side of the ball for a team and the rarest of rare that he is an emotional leader of a unit who is starting to show signs of being a team on the rise. Suh has 6.5 sacks, 30 tackles and an interception returned for a touchdown. How good of an athlete is he ? When Detroit’s kicker was injured in a game, he came in to kick extra points. He could be the best young defensive tackle in the league and the best to come into the league in recent memory.
Honorable Mention: Eric Berry S Kansas City
Offensive Rookie of the Year – Sam Bradford QB St. Louis Rams – Bradford has turned one of the worst offenses in the league around and given life back to Steven Jackson as teams can no longer load 8 and 9 men in the box. The fact that Mark Clayton was released from Baltimore and looked like a Pro Bowler when healthy in St. Louis… Bradford throws a great catchable ball, reads defenses effectively and doesn’t make mistakes. He is aided by playing indoors and in good weather thus far, but he has been a steady playmaker on a team on the rise and is clearly the driving force behind the resurgence.
Honorable Mention: Maurkice Pouncey C Pittsburgh Steelers
Comeback player of the Year – Michael Vick QB Philadelphia – While I despise Vick’s background and the image he used to portray so boldly. I will say he has become a better quarterback and maintained his athletic ability to make his running ability a legit threat on every play. He spent a long time away from the field and no one would have predicted that the time away actually make him a better passer…He has and despite my personal feelings, he deserves the award.
Honorable Mention: Brian Urlacher MLB Chicago Bears
Worst Offseason Acquisition – Brady Quinn QB Denver Broncos – Truth be told, Quinn has never gotten a chance to showcase himself in any prolonged regular season game. However, the Broncos traded away two draft picks and Peyton Hillis to acquire Quinn. Not too high of a price if the guy was going to be your starting QB… Only Peyton Hillis’s unpredicted great start to the season would make this a bad deal for a back-up quarterback…However, when the Broncos decided to draft Tim Tebow as a glorified H-Back in the first round and were seemingly unaware of the NFL rule of not being allowed to use the third string quarterback without de-activating the starting QB is a bit of a riddle. As Tebow is now being used as a goal line option, the Broncos have offered to give Quinn the clipboard instead of the backup job. Add to the mix Kyle Orton is playing out of his mind and was offered a contract extension midway through training camp. This gives the Broncos three quarterbacks on the roster making over $2m this season and several other glaring holes on the roster which the draft choices and salary allocated to Quinn (or Tebow) could have been applied to defensive lineman, outside linebacker or an every down running back.
Best Offseason Acquisition – LaDanian Tomlinson RB New York Jets – The Jets parted ways with Thomas Jones which in and of itself was a bad move, but adding Tomlinson to the team gave them a veteran presence on offense, a capable blocker and check-down passing option to a young quarterback and a running back playing with a chip on his shoulder. The fact that Shonn Greene appears to be his own biggest fan and regressed as a result of complacency makes the addition to the Jets even more critical and was a proactive move instead of a reactive move at the midseason point which are nearly impossible to make in the NFL.
Coach of the Year – Todd Haley ; Kansas City Chiefs – Haley has turned the Chiefs into a contender and he did so by surrendering his ego. He brought in two coordinators who have a better relationship with the General Manager than with him. He changed the offensive system and allowed Matt Cassel to utilize his talents and focus on the run game to open up the passing game.
2010 NFL MVP Predictions

Bonus points for Clay Matthews looking like a 70’s porn star.
If Manning can succeed in leading a lineup of practice squad players to the playoffs, it will be hard to ignore his case for MVP. Rivers is a very strong contender this year.
